What is surrogacy?

Surrogacy is an act of succession or delegation agreed upon between two parties. In the context of parenthood, it is an assisted reproductive technique used when an individual or couple expresses a desire to become parents but cannot carry it out on their own. This process involves two main parties: the intended parents or IPs, and the woman carrying the pregnancy, the surrogate. The goal is to perform a legally supported agreement or contract between them to generate the birth of a biological baby of the IPs, but implanted and carried by the surrogate, who must comply with a series of special requirements. This clear goal keeps the process focused and the end result in sight.

In surrogacy, the surrogate must only focus on carrying on the pregnancy and the birth. Those who’ll provide all the sexual cells and genetic information necessary for the formation of the future baby would ideally be their parents or, if required, a donor. The IP(s) will be the one(s) assuming full responsibility for the future baby. The fertility clinic, on the other hand, plays a crucial role in the surrogacy process. They are responsible for performing the In Vitro Fertilization process, which involves the extraction of eggs from the biological mother or a donor, fertilization with sperm from the biological father or a donor, and the development and successful implantation of the embryo into the surrogate's uterus. This is necessary so that the baby has no genetic link with the surrogate and the legal process after birth is successful. The specialists at the fertility clinic are the ones mediating the entire surrogacy journey so that you feel accompanied and supported throughout your journey toward parenthood.

After birth and after going through the entire legal process with the surrogate, the baby will go to its intended parents. They will now assume its care and provide everything needed so the baby can enjoy their new family home. If the intended parents come from another country, they must also take care of all the documents required for the baby’s relocation.
